Aikido is a continuous hard training and disciplining of the body, mind and senses-Mitsunari Kanai. This unique interpretation of the martial way in which harmony is achieved is at the heart of the teaching at Woburn Aikikai.

    Kanai Sensei

Aikido is excellent for men, women, and children of all ages who are interested in improving their lives and learning self defensive techniques in a supportive environment.

is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba based on ancient martial traditions of physicality and spirituality. The objective of the art is to neutralize an atack without overpowering or unnecessarily harming an aggressor.

Some attributes of Aikido training are:

    • A path of non-confrontation with a Fighting Spirit.
    • Improved cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, flexibility, balance, and coordination.
    • Stress release through rigorous activity improving overall health.
    • A Focused and meditative mental state that is both relaxed and energized.
    • An Effective self-defense technique.

(Japanese swordsmanship) is by invitation only and is closed to the general public.Twice per year we offer an Introduction to Iaido course that is open to all, but with limited space. Call the dojo for more details about this program.

Training: Woburn Aikikai has a fairly rigorous training regimen, but the training is open to anyone who is willing to put in a good effort. This kind of practice is for those who are persistent, can stick with a difficult thing and endure the hardships of training thrown at them. We seek to engender and enhance this quality in our students, and this is the root of our practice.

The perseverance required for success at Woburn Aikikai is not specific to the young, the male, or the athletic, but is a quality found in all ages, in all cultures, in all races and certainly in both genders. While the dojo will accept any student who wants to make a serious effort toward self-improvement, the expectations are that the student will stick with some training regimen appropriate for them.

Private Consultations: Call for more information.

Testing: Tests are not meant to put emphasis on rank or standing but to challenge each person to reach their individual goals. These goals are established between the teacher and the student and are maintained and reinforced on a regular basis.

Kenshusei: The Kenshusei program is for personal students of Baron Sensei, and is by invitation only. Several times per year there is an opening in this program, and candidates are selected from the current student body. The program is intended for those who wish to commit themselves to their Aikido training, and to be fully immersed in their practice.

Meditation: The scheduled times for meditation practice are open to all who wish to join. There is no teaching; it is purely a time to use the peaceful space of the dojo for personal meditation practice. If guidance is needed it will certainly be provided, but no formal teachings happen during this time. Those in the Kenshusei program will have more guided interactions with the instructor.

All visitors, regardless of experience, are most welcome. Please refer to our visitors guide at the dojo to help you get acclimated.
